Thursday May 30 - Semester 2 Final Exam.  Hall of Fame voting completed.  Elon Musk and Theodor Seuss-Geisel inducted. Assignment: Read and consume current events over the summer break.  You will perform much more efficiently in AP Government and Politics if you have a solid understanding of current news events.  

Tuesday May 28 - Hall of Fame presentations for Viola Davis, Enrico Fermi, Robert Goddard, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, and Stephani Germanotta. Assignment: Prepare for the final exam.

Thursday May 23 - Hall of Fame presentations for John Deere, Amelia Earhart, Pete Rose, William Marcy, David Crockett, and Elon Musk. Assignment: Review and revise your notes from the HOF presentations and possibly begin reviewing for exams.

Tuesday May 21 - Hall of Fame presentations for Michael Jackson, George Custer, Dr. Seuss, and Captain John Smith. Assignment: Review and revise your notes from the HOF presentations.

Friday May 17 - Work day on Hall of Fame Presentations. Assignment: You  must be prepared to present your Hall of Fame nominee at the beginning of next class.  NO EXCEPTIONS!

Monday May 13 - Visited the released Free Response Questions from the recent 2019 APUSH national exam.  Began the APUSH Hall of Fame process.  Assignment: none

Thursday May 9 - Reviewed major concepts related to Period 8. Also reviewed the Cold War. Key aspects of American Public opnion related to Foreign Affairs post World War 2.  Assignment: Go to bed prior to 11:00 p.m.  Get up tomorrow morning and consume breakfast of some type (nothing heavy).  Come to school tomorrow ready to show what you know on the National AP Exam that will be given at 8:00 a.m. in Room 114.

Tuesday May 7 - Open questions over items that troubled students during their review. Discussed in fine detail the mechanics of the the actual test.  Spent a good deal of time looking at types of questions and college board expectations. Spent significant time discussing economic trends in U.S. History.  Reviewed change over time style questions.  Assignment: Review Essay Terms.  Continue to make use of some incredibly valuable review sites.  Only 3  days remain until test day!

Kennedy Inaugural Address.  Assignment: Read carefully  pp. 610-617 in Newman.  Be prepared to identify key terms listed on p. 618. Friday Apr. 12 - Completed Chapter 26 in Newman and tested.  Assignment: Read carefully chapter 27: The Eisenhower Years in the Newman text.  Be prepared to teach what you have read to your peers. 

Wednesday Apr. 10 - Open question period over Chapter 26 in Newman.  Extensive discussion over the Taft-Hartley Act, Unions, Truman's relationship with Congress and the Democratic Party.  We discussed the 1948 presidential election.  We analyzed the three big decisions of the Truman Presidency. Assignment: Prepare for a test over the materials in Newman Chapter 26.  Begin Reading Chapter 27 in Newman. And watch this video.

Monday Apr. 8 - Open question period over chapter 25 in Newman. Serious lecture recitation over WW2.  Assignment: read to comprehend Chapter 26 in Newman.

Thursday Apr. 4 - Reunion. Reviewed the causes of World War 2.  Debriefed the question and did some small group work on the essay prompt. Assignment: Be able to answer the questions and identify the vocabulary associated with chapter 25 in Newman. BEGIN SERIOUS REVIEW for the national AP examination.  Key review links are located HERE.  It would be wise to read chapter 26 in Newman and listen to Jennifer Burns # 26 if you can work it in before Wednesday.

Tuesday Apr. 2 -  Graded Study Guides for Chapters 34 & 35. Checked notes from Jennifer Burns lectures #23 & #25. Read as a big group Chapter 25 in Newman. Assignment: Answer "How did the U.S. and its allies develop and carry out their strategy for defeating the Axis Powers?

Friday Feb. 15 - Test over New South, The West, Urbanization, Industrialization, and Gilded Age Politics. Assignment: Read very carefully and take handwritten notes over Chapter 27 - Foreign Policy 1865-1914,  listen to and take handwritten notes over Jennifer Burns' lecture #15 on the Spanish American War.  Know that there will be a quiz over U.S. Foreign Policy 1865-1914 the last class meeting next week (tentatively Thursday at this point in time) [other resources to consider: Quizlet Ch. 27, Joscz Productions , Student Study guide Ch. 27P.S. = All AP Exam monies were turned in today.  10% EC will be awarded.

Wednesday Feb. 13 - Explained succession to the presidency.  Explained the difference between State and state.  Read carefully and researched a question from The Populist Protest by James MacGregor Burns.  Small group review of the questions. Worked on Gilded Age cartoon in small groups. Assignment:  Prepare for a test over the material on the syllabus from chapters 23--26 in Kennedy and chapters 16-19 in Newman.  Remember that the free response question will be regarding the concept of populism.   You are also reminded to have your payment for the APUSH national exam taken care of with the guidance office so that your classmates can earn a 10% bonus on the test.

Friday Feb. 8 - Open discussion led to video clips from Far and Away.  Clips on immigrant perceptions of America, getting off the boat, finding work, residence, and the entertainment scene (boxing/burlesque/gambling). Oklahoma land rush.  Boomer Sooner.  Assignment: Complete section F in Chapter 24 and Chapter 25 on the piece of notebook paper you picked up in class.  Read and take detailed notes on Chapter 23 in Kennedy of the Gilded Age.  You would also be wise to consume Jennifer Burns lecture #8. The next test for this class is two class meetings away over weeks 15 through 18 on the class syllabus.

Wednesday Feb. 6 - Open question period over cameras, technology changes from the 1870s-1890s. Edison and other inventors. Application of science to industry.  Graded all previous work in Chapter 24.  Discussed urbanization and examined population growth of cities during the post civil war period. Read briefly in Chapter 25.  Assignment: Complete a set of handwritten notes for chapter 25 in Kennedy.  Prepare for a quiz over Chapters 24 and 25 in Kennedy. (About 20 questions)

Monday Feb. 4 - Open question period over the Industry Comes of Age in Kennedy and Jennifer Burns lecture #6.  Spent time on the Transcontinental Railroad, Land Grants for Railroads, and Populism. Briefly covered Horizontal Integration.  Assignments: Complete Section 2 Parts C and F to be graded next class along with Sections A and B if you have not done so.  You should also read carefully Examining The Evidence: The Photography of Lewis W. Hine on p. 531.  It would also be wise to spend some time with this short video: Biography of America: Industrial Supremacy.

Monday Jan. 28 -  Mr. Saygers stopped in to discuss the registration process for the AP Exam.  A deal was struck that if 100% of the class pays their registration fee in full on or before Feb. 15, the score on the first test after that date will be bumped up 10% for all students.  If the entire class does not meet the deadline, individuals who are in compliance will earn a 3% bump up.  Graded parts A, E, and F of the chapter 26 student study guide.  Discussed key points of bimetallism. Discussed populism and discussed the Wizard of Oz Allegory. Assignment: Complete reading Chapter Industry Comes of Age in Kennedy. Listen carefully and prepare handwritten notes of the Jennifer Burns Lecture #6. Complete Sections A and B of the Student study guide (will be graded two classes from today).  Remember that you are expected to read and study even if school is not in session due to inclement weather.

Thursday Jan. 24 - Open question period over Jennifer Burns lectures and recorded individual study notes. Worked on individual reading very work questions and chronological study of materials materials related to Chapter section materials in Chapter 26 in round in Kennedy Chapter 26.   Assign in writing a simiter of the Jennifer readining in the Jennifer leating in lecture notes Lecture 5 and lecture 27. Study subject and answer questions sections section F in the study guide.

Wednesday Jan. 16 - First Semester Exam - Assignment:  Read carefully and take handwritten notes from Newman Chapter 16.  Listen and take handwritten notes on Jennifer Burns Lecture #5 and Lecture #7.   There is no Quizlet assignment for Newman 16.  Let's get off to a great start for the second semester.

Monday Jan. 14 - Open question period. Completed four review quizzes from Sue Pojer for daily work grade. Study Buddy for exam prep. Assignment: Prepare for semester exam scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Thursday Jan. 10 - Reviewed key concepts of Reconstruction.  Examined 1. What were the major problems facing the South and the nation after the Civil War?  and 2. How did Reconstruction address them or fail to do so.   Small group brainstorming on each side of the second question.  Broke down in fine detail the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, along with the Tenure of Office Act and details related to the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. Assignment: 100% of your study time that you budget for this class should be devoted to preparing for the Semester Exam.

 

Tuesday Jan. 8 - Reviewed the first 19 presidents. Introduced the Miller Center resources on the Presidents of the United States. Reminded everyone of the upcoming semester exam and semester exam study sessions. Reviewed Reconstruction concepts and specifically examined Andrew Johnson and his role in Reconstruction. Introduced Jennifer Burns and associated resources.  Answered several questions on the Sue Pojer APUSH Reconstruction Quizzes. Assignment: Listen to the Jennifer Burns lecture on Reconstruction. Follow along with Emoni's notes.


Dec. 22 - Jan. 6 - No School  - Winter Break


Friday Dec. 21 - The Giving List in-class activity.  Assignment: Complete the seven sections on Reconstruction at the Khan Academy.  Be prepared for a fundamentals quiz the first class meeting after break. Extra Credit Opportunity: Design a crossword puzzle with 20 terms taken from Newman Chapter 15.  Be certain that your puzzle is printed twice on paper and that a key is available on a third piece of paper.  (you must have two blank puzzles available and a key).  Full extra credit will be given upon the completion of a puzzle of one of your classmates on the first day back from winter break.

Wednesday Dec. 19 - Test over chapters 12, 13, and 14 in Newman.  Assignment: Work on Reconstruction Chapter 15 in Newman and Chapter

Monday Dec. 17 - Open question period over the readings on the Civil War. Completed Ken Burns Civil War Part 1 Day 3.  Worked with primary document "Sullivan Belleau Letter". Assignment:  Prepare for the Test next class period over Newman Chapters 12, 13, 14, and Ken Burns "The Cause".

Thursday Dec. 13 - Ken Burns Civil War Part 1. Day 2. Completed to 1:21.39.  Assignment: Attempt to complete as many of the questions on the video guide through question 116 as possible. I do not expect you to get them all, but I do expect you to gather a majority of them. Please have read Chapter 14 in Newman.  Please anticipate a test on the material covered in Newman Chapters 12, 13, and 14 to be taken on Wednesday December 19.  If we should have inclement weather issues please understand that this 12-13-14 test will take place prior to the Winter Break.  We do not want it to be hanging out there over break.  If you should have questions please see me as soon as possible.

Tuesday Dec. 11 - Ken Burns Civil War Part 1.  Completed to the 55 minute mark.  Assignment: Read carefully chapter 14 in Newman and answer on notebook paper the questions on pp. 285-287 in Newman.  Answer questions 1-67 on the video guide to the best of your ability, based on what we viewed in class.

Friday Dec. 7 - Open question period on Antebellum vocabulary. Examined the Election of 1860. Answered Think as a historian on p. 267.  Spent a great deal of time learning how to analyze a political cartoon using the example on p. 265.   Assignment: Read Read Read.... Do your best to understand what you read.  Strongly consider taking notes while you read so that you are interacting with the reading.  Make reading an active process. Look over the video guide for Ken Burn's Civil War Part 1.

Wednesday Dec. 5 - Outlined main causes of the Civil War.  Sorted through both immediate and fundamental causes.  Completed a brief outline and then did a 15 minute quick write.   Listed the first 16 presidents.  Assignment: Link all of your quizlet stacks to this table: Quizlet Table. Prepare for 10 multiple choice questions on the Antebellum Period.  It will count as a quiz. Massive amounts of video will take place next class meeting.

Monday Dec. 3 - "Played I'm a Good Old Rebel" by South Carolina String Band. Worked on U.S. Geography warm up with U.S. cities. Had a chat about building reading stamina. Checked in notes from Chapter 13 in Newman for grade. Open question period.  Broke down details on thesis work, Freeport Doctrine, Hinton Helper, John Brown, Compromise of 1850, Stephen Douglas, Fugitive Slave Law, and Dred Scott v. Sanford.  Assignment: Using the ten items from the thesis statement assignment, rank in order of most important to least important each of the items role in causing the Civil War.  Continue to read and take notes, work on practice questions related to the 1850's.  It is probably wise to read Kennedy.

Thursday Nov. 29 - Clarification on thesis statements and revisited SOAPS. Broke down POV (point of view) and how people see things differently given the demographics involved.  Small group work comparing thesis statements and SOAPS of the Scott v. Sanford and Lincoln's first inaugural address documents.  Assignment: Read chapter 13 in Newman carefully.  Take some notes to help you interact with the material.  Consider the note taking style that best fits your learning style.  Clean up your SOAPS.

Tuesday Nov. 27 - Open discussion period over the Into the West video that was assigned over Thanksgiving Break.  Learned about ECCO and SOAPS.  Individual work using SOAPS on Scott v. Sanford 1857 and Lincoln's first inaugural address.  Assignment: Complete your SOAPS if you were not able to finish them in class.  Complete this assignment on a piece of notebook paper and bring it to class.

Tuesday Nov. 20 - Open question period.  Quiz over Chapter 17.  Question analysis skill practice.  Assignment:  Over Thanksgiving Break watch the first two of the videos listed.  If you can find the time and are interested, please feel free to watch the third.  No notes necessary. While watching pay close attention to the treatment of non whites.  Also pay very close attention to the motivations of both the whites and the native peoples.   To really understand the relationships and family structures it is best to watch the videos in order.

Friday Nov. 16 - Open question period with Chapters 14 and 17.   Worked specifically in Chapter 17 on Manifest Destiny with major emphasis on Texas and the Mexican War.  Did some simple map work on maps included in Chapter 17.  Assignment: Prepare for a simple 10-15 question quiz over Manifest Destiny.

Tuesday Nov. 13 - Warmed up with Sheppard Geography, Studied the Mapping of American History, Graded Chapter 14 Section II subsections B, D, E, and F. Watched video clip on the Gadsden Purchase.  Small group work on Chapter 17 Focus QuestionsAssignment: Answer the 16 questions on pp. 377A-377B.  Please bring your answers on a half a sheet of notebook paper.  Read carefully the Compromise of 1850.  Remember to use the link to a printed transcript for easier reading. Friday Nov. 9 - Worked on Chapter 14 in Kennedy.  Watched most of the John Green Crash Course U.S. History on the market economy. Broke down key vocabulary associated with the period.  Assignment:  Complete section B on the Student Study Guide and read carefully chapter 17 in Kennedy.  There will be a ten question quiz over chapter 17 in Kennedy.  Please be prepared. 

Wednesday Nov. 7 - Unit 3 Test. Assignment: Complete sections D, E, and F on this Student Study Guide for next class.  Obviously read carefully chapter 14 in Kennedy.  We will be working exclusively on Chapter 14 next class period.

Friday Nov. 2 - Reviewed for Unit 3 test.   Quizlet practice for vocabulary review (extra credit opportunity). Assignment: Prepare for Unit 3 test.  Test will cover the material in Kennedy 13, 15, 16, and Newman 9, 10, and 11.   

Wednesday Oct. 31 - Open question period with specific topics of Jackson and his effect on American democracy. Discussed Jackson and the Bank. Discussed the Specie Circular and Pet Banks. Looked at the elections of 1828, 1832, 1836, and 1840. Assignment: Quiz over Chapter 10.  Prepare to take on Chapter 11 in Newman and Chapters 15 and 16 in Kennedy.  Goal is to test on Wednesday next week.

Monday Oct. 29 - Andrew Jackson Common or Uncommon?  Prompt.  Quizlet review work on chapter 10. Assignment: Prepare for a vocabulary quiz over chapter 10 in Newman. Of course you can always be starting to break down Chapter 11 in Newman and 15 and 16 in Kennedy.  Most likely looking at a test early next week.

Tues. Oct. 23 - Open question period with discussion over political parties, Jacksonian America, and nativism. Signed up for the 2018 Americanism Test. Reviewed Quizlet for Chapter 9 in Newman.  Quiz over Chapter 9 in Newman. Previewed Chapter 10 in Newman. Assignment: Read carefully The Jacksonian Revolution.  It is imperative that you carefully read Chapter 10 in Newman as well.  Develop a T-Chart that contains evidence that Jackson was uncommon for his time and evidence that proves Jackson was common for his time.  As always it would be wise to complete a Quizlet for Newman Chapter 10.   If you can find a few minutes, Age of Jackson is a pretty good summary of the high points on Jackson.

Fri. Oct. 19 - 10 of 18 students missing due to Link Crew Field Trip.  Read carefully the opening pages of Chapter 9 in the Newman text. Took in video on how to harvest wheat and hay.  Assignment: Prepare for quiz on Chapter 9 in Newman.  It would also be wise to study carefully Chapter 9 quizlet. (hint hint)

Wed.  Oct. 17 - Large Group Discussion over A Personal Side of a Developing People . Looked specifically at cleanliness (or lack of), alcohol consumption, gender differences, sexual behavior, and other social behaviors of Americans in the early 19th century.  Talked about restroom facitilies, running water, making soap, and butchering animals for food. Wrote a statement regarding what needed to be fixed first.  Worked on a  Quizlet check up over Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion.  Assignment: Practice your quizlet stack from Newman Chapter 9.  Goal was to have a quiz over chapter 9, but due to a large number of absences, the quiz will be postponed until Tuesday Oct. 23.

Mon. Oct. 15 - Test over Unit 2.  Assignment: Read completely A Personal Side of a Developing People and The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion.  You should also complete a Quizlet stack for Chapter 9 in Newman.

Wed. Oct. 10 - Read parts of and examined various graphics (maps, charts, and paintings) in Chapter 12 of Kennedy.  Spent particular time on the Monroe Doctrine and the Era of Good Feelings.  Assignment: Prepare for a test over weeks five, six, and seven on the class syllabus.   The test will be administered next class meeting.

Monday Oct. 8 - Checked out Ohio Historical Markers related to the time period of 1776 through 1820. Worked on key vocabulary over the Jefferson and Madison administrations. Assignment: Read carefully chapter 12 in Kennedy.  It would also be wise to make certain that you quizlet stacks are current through chapter 8 in Newman.

Thurs. Oct. 4 - Oates Reading on the Louisiana Purchase: A Dangerous Precedent. Small group brainstorming on questions 1-5 on p. 187.   Brief lecture on the history of the Louisiana Territory. Assignment: Check out the Lewis and Clark links on the class main page.  Work on Jefferson/Madison Quizlet stack.  Extra credit: Photo of you at Fort Meigs and at the Battle of Fallen Timbers Monument.  Photo must be indisputable that you are at those locations.  It would be wise to do a little background reading before going to the location so that you can understand the significance of that location in United States History. Tues. Oct. 2 - Discussed the Election of 1800.  Conducted a quick write on the Election of 1800's signifcance. Watched The Presidents  of the United States 1789-1825 through the John Adams administration. Assignment: Continue to work on Chapter 7 in Newman and Chapter 11 in Kennedy.  You should also watch the The Presidents of the United States beginning at the 21:33 mark.  You are only responsible for the Thomas Jefferson portion of the video.

Fri. Sept. 28 - Examined key foreign and domestic issues of the Washington and Adams administrations. Watched video clips of John Adams. Passed back unit 1 test  and reviewed key test taking tips.  Assignment: Short quiz over Washington and Adams Administrations. Read Newman chapter 7.  Just read it.... and read it to understand.  If you don't understand, be prepared to ask questions in class on Tuesday.

Wed. Sept. 26 - Examined some questions that were commonly missed on the test.  Examined essay terms. Studied both the Washington and Adams administrations. Assignment: Complete a Quizlet stack for Chapter 6 in Newman. Review the Video links that were assigned on Monday.  There will be a quiz over the items in Week five of the syllabus, therefore it would be wise to prepare.

Mon. Sept. 24 - Test Retake.  Assignment: Complete reading carefully Chapter 6 in Newman. You should also watch these video clips and summarize each.  Plainly state the main idea of the clip in 25-50 words on a Google Drive Document.  Do not share it until directed to do so.

 

Thurs. Sept. 20 - Test #1.   Assignment: Be prepared to outline the key domestic and foreign issues of the Washington and Adams' Administrations. You should also be well into comprehending the items on week 5 on the syllabus.

Tues. Sept. 18 - Open question period. Reviewed points of conflict between the colonists and Britain. Looked at a review items 1607-1754. Assignment: Test #1 next class period.

Thurs. Sept. 13 - Open question period over readings and previous class. Took notes on French/Indian War and the opening interactions between colonists and Britain.  Explained Cajuns and sampled some Cajun music.  Worked on video notes from Chapters 6 & 7.  Assignment: Complete video notes for chapters 6 and 7 in Kennedy. Begin reading to comprehend chapters 8 & 9.   It may also be wise to begin to prepare for our first test of the quarter that will happen next week.

 

Tues. Sept. 11 - Remembering Sept. 11, 2001. Wrote a FRQ on New England v. Chesapeake colonial development. Assignment: Read carefully and comprehend the material in Kennedy chapters 6 and 7.  Build a Quizlet stack for Newman Chapter 4.

Fri. Sept. 7 - Worked on document analysis from the 1993 DBQ. Answered a few questions about reading assignments. Assignment:  Watch carefully and take notes on Episode #2 of Biography of America: English Settlement.  Link you notes to the class table.  Be certain to share your document with ccox along with the ability to edit.

Wed. Sept. 5 - Current Event reading session. Whip It Around big group style. Individual work on Chapter 3 in Kennedy video review. Sue Pojer APUSH quizzes work. Previewed 1993 DBQ.  Assignment: Using PERSIA, categorize each of the 8 documents that are a part of the 1993 DBQ.  You should also summarize into one sentence the meaning of each document as it directly relates to the prompt.  Stay up to speed with your reading as you should be through chapter 5 before coming to class.  Always remember to read and comprehend what you read.

No School - Labor Day


Fri. Aug. 31 - Visited Early American historical sites of Roanoke Island and Jamestown using Google Earth.  Reviewed student guide for Chapter 1 section II parts A, B, C, D, and E.  Quiz over week 1 materials. Assignment: Complete the readings for week two on the class syllabus.  At minimum have chapters 3 and 4 completed in Kennedy with excellent understanding.  You should also complete a chapter 3 Newman Vocabulary Quizlet and add it to the class folder.

Wed. Aug. 29 - Open question period over Thesis Statements and sharing them via Google Drive.  Added Chapter 1 Vocabulary to Quizlet.  Ran a 7-7-7 and concluded with Quizlet Live.  Assignment: Complete Student Guide Part II sections "A" and "D" along with Part III for next class. Also build a Quizlet using the vocabulary for Newman Chapter 2 prior to next class.

Mon. Aug. 27 - Shortened class due to PBIS assembly.  Open question period on Pre Columbian Western hemisphere and the similarities and differences in colonial policies of Spain, France, and Britain. Discussed specific concerns about vocabulary.  Assignment: Continue reading and taking notes over the readings in Kennedy chapters 1 and 2.  Complete your quizlet terms for Chapter 1 in Newman.  Have a google doc that demonstrates your ability to write a thesis on the main themes of week 1 from the course syllabus.

 

Thurs. Aug.  23 - Opening Day - Shortened time due to school pictures. Information Survey Completed.  Passed out Kennedy and Newman. Examined the syllabus and how grades are determined. Assignment: Read and understand chapters 1 and 2 in Kennedy. Be prepared to address the main theme questions listed on the syllabus.  Those questions are the ones with the MT next to them.   Begin building a quizlet stack with the terms at the end of chapter 1 in Newman. (You will be given some class time to work on finishing your quizlet next class.)
